12th Annual Art on the Streets in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs Downtown

Tejon St Colorado Springs

There’s more to the Colorado Springs downtown scene than just night clubs and multiple Starbucks. Downtown is filled with sculptures and artwork which are refreshed every year as part of the Art on the Streets program.

AOTS brings artists from all over the world, competing to have their artwork displayed for the entire year throughout the 40-square-blocks. Believe it or not, we’re now approaching the 12th year of this creative program, presented by US Bank, and sponsored by G.E. Johnson and Nor’wood Development Group.

Although the call for entries has ended (first couple weeks in March is the deadline if you want to try for next year), the launch ceremony and announcement of winning entries takes place on June 18th. This is a great event and is worth attending to connect with the artists and be the first to view the top picks of juror Jan Schall.

As a downtown businessman and local artist myself, I love seeing the variety and unique pieces created for this competition. Both tourist and locals stop to check out the sculptures, and often snap a photo as a fun reminder of a day in downtown Colorado Springs.

Anyone can enjoy and appreciate this artwork throughout the year as you stroll around downtown. In fact, check out the AOTS website to print your Walking Tour Guide so you don’t miss a single piece.

Art is all around us – we just have to find it and capture it.

Where do you go to get your inspiration as an artist? The park? A hike in the mountains? Your art studio?

Local Colorado Springs artist RL Hyde found a unique place to spur her creative juices – the local scrap yard. I went along on this field trip and took some pictures myself. But she was able to see the beauty in the simple things, the dirty things, the things that were “junk” to others.

Not only did she capture some great images on her camera, she also found some excellent items to create new art with, which I’m sure we’ll be seeing the results of soon!

If you’re a local Colorado Springs artist, consider taking a trip to Western Scrap to find some true gems for your inspiration.

Colorado Springs Artist RL Hyde exhibits work at East Library

Moth Girl By Fine Artist RL Hyde

Moth Girl

Colorado Springs artist RL Hyde has been given an excellent opportunity to display her artwork at the East Library in Colorado Springs. Her art will be on display for the entire month of July 2010 as part of the Community Connections Art Display. The companion gallery along side RL Hyde will be oil and acrylics work by artist Ronnie Policy.

While she’s excited about the opportunity, she’s still trying to decide exactly what to display. She has a wide variety of pieces and creations that are still competing in  her mind for public viewing. Many people like her “Future Artifacts” collection, which combines a historic look with current symbols and markings, such as modern bar codes.

Improv Comedy group Stick Horses in Pants provide a great source for family entertainment

Live improv comedy in Colorado Springs

Stick Horses in Pants Live Improv Comedy

From performing arts to art galleries, there are many opportunities in Colorado Springs to enjoy the work of local artists. However, sometimes it’s hard to find an event the whole family will enjoy.

If you’re looking for something truly enjoyable that you won’t have to worry about what the kids see and hear, I would highly recommend Stick Horses in Pants comedy improv group.

Stick Horses in Pants is a local based improv group who have traveled all over Colorado, Wyoming, and even the Northeast (Washington state) performing  live improv comedy. The group was started in 2004 and they now have 9 players. They have regular shows at the Broadmoor Hotel Theater in Colorado Springs (usually twice a month), plus you can book them for private events, such as company parties, Christmas parties, weddings, and more.

The best thing about this improv group is their commitment to keep their content family friendly. It’s something a family can do together, and is very interactive as they get their suggestions from the audience.

They typically do short form improv, much like the TV show Who’s Line Is It Anyway? with a variety of games that will absolutely keep you laughing. They are a family and community favorite, as they’ve earned many awards over the years such as Best Theater Troupe, Best Artist, and Best Live Comedy.

Colorado Springs art community has something for everyone

The Colorado Springs community has some amazing artists and I love making a day of seeing their work.  Last Sunday, my friend and I went to Manitou Springs to walk around and see the various art galleries.  My friend is a local, Colorado Springs artist, and it was inspiring to see so many forms of art, from sculptures to jewelry.

If you’re looking for a relaxing weekend, try perusing the art galleries in Manitou Springs or Old Colorado City. They often have events and art walks that you can stroll at your leisure and appreciate all this city has to offer.

Plus, there are other art forms here, such as short form improv comedy shows and musical artist.

Spend a day enjoying the work of all kinds of talented artists in this community!
